Installation Costs Guidelines
The best way to make a smart choice for your solar system.
Installation Guidelines
Whether you choose to use your own installer or one of our recommended installers, the following outlines the basic responsibilities of the installer when installing a solar system for you. This information will help you determine whether your chosen installer is qualified to handle the job. If you find that your installer is unclear in their feedback, we recommend reconsidering your choice. For a more convenient and hassle-free experience, we suggest selecting one of our recommended installers. They are familiar with these requirements and can work seamlessly with you to ensure the project is completed successfully.
1. Site Assessment and System Evaluation
- Site Assessment: Conduct a detailed assessment of the customer's property, including roof structure, orientation, tilt, shading, and the current electrical system.
- System Evaluation: Conduct a detailed evaluation of the product list provided by the customer, including panel layout and quantity, inverter selection (single-phase or three-phase), battery installation location, and cable routing.
2. Obtaining Necessary Permits and Approvals
- Distributed Generation (DG) Connection Application: Secure approval from the line company for grid connection.
- Meter Replacement: Communicate with the power company to replace the smart meter.
- Inspection: Schedule an appointment with the inspector and obtain approval for the installed system.
3. Pre-Installation Preparation
- Complete all pre-installation preparations: This includes inspecting and receiving the main equipment provided by the customer (solar panels, inverters, batteries, etc.), providing mounting brackets, wires, conduits, and other auxiliary materials based on the equipment provided by the customer, scheduling installation times, and coordinating the installation team.
4. On-Site Installation
- Panel Installation: Install the solar panels on the roof or ground-mounted system, ensuring they are securely fixed and properly aligned.
- Electrical Wiring: Connect the panels to the inverter and integrate the system with the customer's electrical system, ensuring all connections are safe and comply with regulations.
- System Integration: If applicable, integrate the battery storage system with the solar system and grid.
5. System Testing and Commissioning
- Function Testing: Perform functionality tests to ensure all components are working correctly and the system is performing as expected.
- Compliance Check: Ensure the installation meets New Zealand electrical standards and safety regulations, including but not limited to AS/NZS 5033.
6. System Activation and Customer Education
- System Activation: Officially connect the system to the grid and start operation, ensuring it begins generating power.
- Customer Training: Provide the customer with operating instructions, explaining how to use, maintain, and monitor the system.
7. Maintenance and Support
- Regular Maintenance: Offer ongoing maintenance services to ensure the system operates efficiently over the long term. This may include panel cleaning, equipment checks, and software updates.
- Customer Support: Provide continued technical support to address any issues or questions the customer may have during system operation.

Installation Costs Guidelines
The installation cost may vary depending on factors such as the type of house (e.g., single-story or two-story), roofing materials (e.g., tin roof, tile roof), roof structure, the number and layout of solar panels, their orientation, and the placement of key components like the main switchboard, inverter, and battery. Additionally, ensuring health and safety often requires equipment like scaffolding or a scissor lift. While these factors can affect the overall cost, they are all measurable. By referring to the market installation prices we’ve provided and the details in the installer’s quote, you can more effectively assess whether your installation costs are reasonable.
If you're unsure whether your installation pricing is reasonable, you can also contact us, and we might be able to offer you some helpful suggestions.
